Pediatric Sleep Consultant

I was no longer certain I could be decent – never mind loving - to the people I cared about most. Without adequate sleep I was also struggling to parent with joy and confidence.

For me, signs of being overtired include a forgotten cell phone or coffee tumbler on top of my car. Remarkably, both remain functional despite more “joy rides” than I’d like to count. Perhaps you too have your telltale signs of being overtired? Whenever I push the sleep envelope - as is easy to do in this busy life – I’m reminded of the importance of sleep.

After completing my pediatric training, I thought I had the whole parent thing “in the bag”. I quickly realized that I still had a lot to learn!  By the time my first child turned 5 months of age, my husband and I had resorted to splitting the night into shifts.

Following a bleary eyed “vacation” to Maine, my family returned home to a water leak. While my husband tended to the flood, I relocated to my parents’ home for the night.  My mother discovered me the next morning asleep on the cold tiled kitchen floor, within inches of my daughter’s swing. I had been too worried to leave her unattended yet too out of sorts to fashion a more hospitable sleeping surface. Unfortunately, my husband had not fared much better on the home front. I recall wondering how we could possibly manage another night of poor rest. When you are sleep deprived it is hard to weather even the smallest of storms.

I was no longer certain I could be decent – never mind loving - to the people I cared about most. Without adequate sleep I was also struggling to parent with joy and confidence.

The thing is, improved sleep for your child and family is well within your grasp.

Resolved to do something about the situation, I camped out in the parenting section of Chapters with a cranky overtired infant in toe. Leafing fretfully through the variety of books on sleep, I felt overwhelmed by the amount, and often, conflicting information offered.  What was I supposed to do? Taking my search online, I came across a sleep consultant. Despite having never heard of a sleep consultant during my years of pediatric training, I took the plunge and signed up for a sleep package. Two weeks later, zombie-parents were back on the trajectory of a loving couple better equipped with the basics (adequate sleep) to parent our daughter to the best of our ability.  Whew! I remain so appreciative of the one-on-one guidance that countless books or online articles could not provide.

Two more wonderful children later, I’ve faced my share of sleep challenges including hairy nap transitions, frequent night visitors, exhausting early morning awakenings, time change challenges, and the sleep disruptions that come with illnesses.

Let me say with confidence, that I’ve been in the parental sleep trenches but come out more knowledgeable and highly driven to help other families. Complementing my experience as a pediatrician, I have completed the Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program, a 4 month-long evidence based training program, through the Family Sleep Institute, and remain committed to lifelong learning around all matters related to both children and sleep.

Sleep is fundamental to wellbeing.  I can’t understate this having witnessed the ill effects of sleeplessness – as well as the transformative change that can come with better sleep - both as a parent and as a pediatrician.  Children cannot be at their best - physically, emotionally or behaviourally - without adequate rest.

The thing is, improved sleep for your child and family is well within your grasp.

Imagine being only weeks away from a more rested family: check out my sleep packages to find out how.
